- First, Larry and I moved out of the basement apartment. I do not remember why but it may have been to save money as we did not want to live there during the summer. Again, Larry came to the forefront and made a deal with some of the guys from Wyndmere. I am not sure why we wanted to live with them as they were the ones who beat on in our senior year of basketball! It may have been to save money! Anyway they had a house with several bedrooms so we moved in. I do not remember if we each had our own bedroom or not but I am guessing we did.
- I was still floundering out in space with my major. I was still taking some of those darn speech classes that I at first thought would launch me towards radio stardom but instead was going down the path of speech therapy!
- Gail and I were still dating and she was a senior at Minot. She was a senior in elementary education and speech therapy. We were talking about her trying to find a job in the Fargo area as I finished my degree the next year. THEN she wrote me in the middle of the fall term and said her advisor wanted her in the worst way to go another year for her masters in Deaf Education. Well that was not going to fly very well so to entice her to stay on her advisor said she may have a scholarship for me as well! Now I was listening. I had figured that I would need another $700 or so from the National Defense Loan Program for my senior year. Maybe I could get a scholarship instead of borrowing! In late October of 1967 I took the train to Minot to interview for the next year. I purchased a Pendelton sport jacket and wore my turtle neck blue shirt and complimented it with my cuffless gray trousers and my brown slip on shoes. I have to admit I am not sure if I wanted to impress her advisor or Gail but whatever I felt I was pretty darn sharp!!! I headed back to Fargo Sunday evening with an offer of a full ride scholarship PLUS a small stipend each month. How can one pass that up?
- In December I asked Gail to marry me and we would make it happen quickly! I transferred to Minot at the end of the fall quarter and moved into the dorm there. I enrolled in classes and in order to make up for my work study that I left behind in Fargo I applied for and got a job in the cafeteria on campus. Gail and I had a huge argument about that as she felt that meant we could not spend enough time together and I did not want to borrow any more money. I have to say I have no idea who was right BUT my job of washing pots and pans in the campus cafeteria was, without a doubt, the worst job I ever had. To this day I cringe when I think about it.
- We made the wedding happen that spring, the day after Gail graduated from college . We both went to summer school starting a few days after the wedding. We would both be in the Deaf Education Program the next year. Gail for her masters and I for my B S degree.
Here we are standing in front of our summer basement home in Minot in the summer of 1967. Counting this move we would move a total of 4 times in the next 12 months. It was on campus at the School for the Deaf in the fall, back to Minot in the winter in the basement of Ms. Cox home high on the hill and then back to Devils Lake in the spring again.
That was my junior year of college. Tomorrow I graduate!
My heart skipped a beat this morning as I talked to Terry for a very short time and then she said she was short of breath so we hung up. I need to call her again this AM. I am sure she is fine but the breath comment has me worried. Not sure if anything happens over the weekend but I sure would like to get the results of my test. Not that it would help Terry at all but still would like to know.
That is all for now.
