Time goes quickly

A week of memories and fun.  The top picture is of Kim and her kids Josh, Tori and Sam and Aaron/Amy with Leo and Ruby. Terry and I had the fun of taking them to the "Fish House" which is Terry's favorite place to eat.  After we were all full we had to stop at the "Royal Scoop" for some homemade ice cream.  The bottom picture was taken by Terry of us in the community pool where we live.
We had a great time hosting Kim and kids for 4 nights and spending time with Aaron/Amy and kids three different times.  I think they all enjoyed the activities and the weather as it was about perfect when they were here.  We said good-bye to Kim and kids Wednesday AM and to Aaron/Amy and kids Friday night after Amy's parents, Jean and Dick treated all of us to a dinner out.  Jean and Dick took them to the airport on Saturday.
With all the company we actually did get some things done.  Both of us got some tennis in, Terry got the material taken care of for the cushions for the kitchen and I finished the wood work for the kitchen.  I will make the trim this summer but we will stain the seats this spring and the cushions should be done in a couple of weeks.  It will be fun.  I may make a table to go with it too.
We are having no winter here.  The temps have been in the low to mid 80s but no rain so it is really dry.  There is usually not a lot of rain this time of the year but this year it is really lacking any rain.
We have gotten a little biking in.  On Saturday we went on a longer ride, we made it home in 22 miles but Terry went around the circle again and came in at 23 miles.  We didn't put on our padded shorts but in the END we should have.
I can't say anything about the end of the coffee as it is evening so will say good night.

Fun Days ahead

I know I have posted this picture of our farm house before but today my story goes with it.  Ahead of the car and a bit to the right is where the tee was for my golf course.  After I ramble a bit I will add the story that I wrote for my last non-fiction writing class which ended last night.
Terry and I are in for some excitement in the days ahead.  Daughter Kim and three of her children, ages 11,13,15, are coming in tomorrow morning.  They will stay with us for a few days.  I think it has been 4 or 5 years since they have come down from Preachtree City GA.  Then on Sunday Aaron/Amy and kids, 2,4, will fly in.  We will pick them up at the airport and drive them to where Amy's parents are staying for the month.  I think we will get to see them Tuesday and maybe Thursday or Friday.
My wood project is getting near completion.  Well actually I will not be able to put the trim on it until next fall as I do not have the tools to make the trim here but I intend to have it in the kitchen by tonight.  Can we use it then, not really as there will be no cushions yet.  Anyway it has been fun and challenging to make it.  I think when all is finished I would give myself a B or maybe a B+ on the work.
A by product of my woodworking is a swollen thumb which I think has a tiny bit of metal in it.  I will have to work on that today after my morning glue job and tennis play at 10:30.
Terry has been under the weather the last 24 hours.  We have a  lunch date with a friend but will cancel that this morning.  We kind of hosted a get together of people around here yesterday evening.  It was held at the pool and just finger food and bring your own drinks.  Hosting it is perhaps over stated but Terry did come up with the idea, we made the flyer and handed them out and then went early to set up.  It seemed like people really had a good time.  Man those spicy wings were delicious.
Now my story.
My North Dakota Golf Course
In the spring of 59, I was a skinny, shirtless, shoeless twelve year old at the time, my older brother Ronald handed me a beat up black plastic golf bag with a wooden driver, a three wood, a nine iron, a seven iron, a few real balls, some plastic practice balls and—no putter. I was excited as anything my older brother gave me seemed to be almost from God himself.   I wasn’t sure why he gave them to me as the nearest course was 50 miles away but for the next several years I found ways to entertain myself with them.  In fact they took me to places I could only dream of and transformed me into people who were my heroes.
I examined the clubs that day and then set the bag in the corner of our rickety shed.  I was careful to set them in a place where rain would not get them wet or birds would not do their thing on them.  Most of the buildings on our farm were in need of much repair and the old shed where the Ford tractor sat was no exception.
Most of my time was spent on the tractor but frequently I could talk my dad out of working.  On those days I spent my time with a fishing pole at the nearby lake, making wooden guns or playing Lone Ranger with the ones I had made, practicing my pocket knife skills, playing ball or listening to the radio if there was a baseball game.  During these years I found ways to have fun alone and with almost no resources.
The clubs, they sat in the corner of the shed for some time gathering dirt and dust until one day, with nothing to do, I decided I could have fun using them.  As I look back now my creative mind took over and the next weeks all of my spare time was spent making a one hole golf course out of our yard.  The distance from our house to the the road was 90 yards, which was a decent 9 iron for me.  I put a stake in the center of the ditch and with a rope traced out a circle as large as possible, about 12 feet in diameter.  Next I dug the circle down about 3 inches.  When that was finished I attached the bucket to the back of the Ford tractor and made several trips to the lake to get sand.  When the circle was filled with sand I took 5 gallons of used oil and mixed it into the sand.  I knew that would prevent weeds from growing.  For the cup I took an old Folgers coffee can and dug it down in the center of the sand.  At that time mom and dad were drinking the real coffee. When they grew into their elder years they drank the instant coffee that came in a jar and formed foam on top which made it look like a steaming cup of hot beer.   For the final ingredent mom gave me an old mop handle to which I nailed a red triangular piece of worn underwear to the top and there was my golf flag.  After making a square tee off place near the front door of our house I was ready to golf.  I now had my own private golf course.
Wait a minute.  I needed something to smooth the sand down so I could putt.  I found an old iron cylinder; it had to be heavy, and attached a wood handle to it. That allowed me to smooth out a wide path from the ball to the hole before each putt.
Now I could golf but I still had no putter.  Here is where I experienced more pain than any time in my life.   Because my course was only 90 yards long I did not need my wooden driver so I converted it to a putter.   I decided to cut the handle off and attach it at a right angle to the top of the wooden head.  To do this I used our antique drill press.  As I held the drill press cylinder with my left hand my right hand slipped off the chuck and like a missile it sped upwards toward the cylinder which had my thumb underneath.  Instantly it felt like someone had hit my thumb nail as hard as they could with a hammer.  Stars appeared in the dingy light of the shed and then pain ripped through my thumb as if it had been cut off.  Construction was instantly halted.   In an effort to subdue the throbbing that night I tried to sleep with my thumb tied to the bed post above my head.  Eventually the pain subsided but not that night.    Several days later the thumb nail came off and it was still several more days before my putter conversion resumed.  Finally the handle was glued in the hole drilled on top of the old wooden driver head.  As time went on I found the best way to putt was to hold the putter in front of me and stand like Bob Pettit would stand for his two handed free throws when he stared for the St. Louis Hawks.  I think I actually got pretty good.
But I found I had a problem.  The width of my fairway was only 50 feet.  To the left was mom’s garden and an occasional hook left me among the tomatoes, beans or worse the flowers.   Carefully I would pick up the ball and take a free lie outside the garden, I never counted any penalty.  However what I usually did was slice the ball to my right, well beyond the fairway.  There the balls would land in uncut grass that tended to get taller and taller as the summer went on.  My ball supply consisted of only a few and I could easily lose them all on a Sunday afternoon.  After spending much of one Sunday hunting for balls instead of golfing I came up with a great idea.  When I had lost the last ball I would go to the dilapidated granary, get an empty 55 gallon barrel and roll it back and forth.  With each bump I would stoop down and pick up the ball. I think I had the best ball finder on any golf course anywhere.
I quickly realized that just hitting balls got old so I invented games.  The game I would play the most was Arnold Palmer vs. Jack Nicklaus vs. Gary Player.  I would hit three balls and then play them against each other.  I made sure Arnold Palmer won most of the time.   I found I could use that cylinder to make kind of a line from the ball to the cup if Arnold Palmer was putting.   Of course I was by myself so in addition to being a golfer I could also play the part of a golf analysis and radio announcer.  In my mind I became famous.
After high school I left home and started college where my brother Dave attended.  He and I would play golf several times a year.  I was always best with my short game, about 90 yards and closer!  To this day I am terrible with my driver.  After all who practices with their driver on a 90 yard hole?
Sometimes I find myself reflecting back on those lazy summer Sunday afternoons.  After our Sunday lunch of egg sandwichs with homemade dill pickles mom would tend to her flowers or knit while dad took his afternoon nap but I would be transformed into Arnie Palmer and win championship after championship on my tiny private North Dakota golf course.

Some writing

Below is a writing I did for class.  Be warned I said some time ago that I would post writings from time to time so here is one.
Terry and I had a low key weekend.  It was very cool for here.  Sunday morning the temp was 51 and this morning it was 48--burrr.  Last night Terry made a dish that was in one of the grocery store ads.  It had lobster and shrimp in it and it was delicious.  We also made a quick trip to Trader Joes yesterday morning.  It is the first Trader Joes in FL (I think) and since it opened Friday it has been a zoo there.  Yesterday at 11:00 AM there were at least 3 police directing traffic as people were a bit crazy.
I have made some progress on the seating for the kitchen.  It will be in two pieces and I have the more difficult of the two left so we will see how it comes out.  We had a lady here on Friday to give us some ideas about the three cushions we will need.  Hopfully all will turn out OK.
Daughter Kim and three kids may come to stay on Friday and then Aaron/Amy and kids will arrive in town Sunday afternoon.  They will touch down about 5:30 and will be hungry.  Aaron asked if there would be a good, fast place to eat near the airport and we thought sure, Chick Fil A would be perfect as they do not have them in Madison I don't think but then we realized Chick Fil A is closed on Sunday-booo hooo.
I broke down and sent for a new camera case yesterday.  I now have 4 lenses for my camera and my old case is just not large enough.  Amazon.com came to the rescue with free shipping and no tax so how can one go wrong?
I really should go on a run this morning.  It is now 8:44 and I was too lazy to run in 40s temp this morning but now it is all the way up to low 50s so maybe I can venture out for my dazzling 2.2 mile run which I am happy if I finish in under 22 minutes.  I try to put on my black shorts and my black top so I look the part of a real runner and fast too as this body tends to usually go in low gear!
Here is the writing.

I find much enjoyment in woodworking.  With much to occupy my time I often need to wind down, relax, put on my creative mind and spend time in my wood shop.  It seems to propel me into another world, a world that consists of good things, fun times and wonderful endings.   I am always looking for tools to make it better, more fun and more relaxing.
The end result for woodworkers is always proof that our time was well spent.  A miter that has a perfect seam, a glue line that is invisible, a corner that is perfect or a glass like finish are things we strive for in our work.  What makes these things possible?  One always needs to measure, measure again and then measure one more time.  After that is time to cut and assemble.
I have multiple measuring devices in my shop.  Some are wooden, some are metal, some are long, some are short, some are old and some are new.  However, I have one that takes little space, is always at my fingertips and never never fails me.  It is a 6 inch metal ruler with four different markings.  It takes no space, in fact it fits in my shirt pocket, it saves loads of time and it is the most accurate one I have.  It always is my “go to tool”.   If you have not purchased this handy little guy you are missing out on one of the best tools and best buys for a woodworker.  Also, no need to bring the bank with you as you can take it home for the price of a Grande Mocha at Starbucks.  This little guy is made by many companies but mine was made by General.  The tiny six inch ruler has markings etched on top and bottom of both sides and I find myself using all four at different times.  If you are in need of normal measuring you probably will use the edge that is 1/8th but  if you need something a bit more precise you will use the 1/16th edge, the 1/32nd edge or the 1/64th edge.   You may say never in my life have I measured to the 1/64th of an inch but for me I do often and for the serious woodworker I am sure that is true.
How does a 6 inch ruler save time?  How often do you search for that measuring device you need for a certain cut?  Finally after you find it you squint and contemplate just where to mark between those lines that are 1/16th of an inch apart?  If you are like me you measure and then go back and go through the same process several times before you cut.   I used to do that but now I simply reach in my pocket, take out my 6 inch ruler and measure.  When I am finished I measure again and one more time but the marks are right in front of me and there is no debate as to where to cut.  When I am satisfied I put the ruler in my chest pocket and cut away.
There are tools in my wood shop I rarely use, tools that I use occasionally and others I use often but this little ruler is used all the time.
So, don’t walk but run to the store for one today.  A word of caution, you will not find this at your local hardware store or department store such as Target.   It is a specialty for woodworkers so you will have to go to a woodworker’s store.  In case you think this is a new product, mine came from my dad’s tool box of years ago.

Finally I found one

Here is the shark tooth that I found on the beach about 2 weeks ago.  Each time we go for a walk on the beach I look, sometimes more than others.  I should have put something in the photo so one could see the size.  However I can now tell any size and people will not know the difference!!  Actually it is about the size of a dime.  I used my macro lens so that is why I could get such a closeup.
Terry and I went to the neurosurgeon yesterday to consult with him about my situation that landed me in the hospital January 30.  The most important thing to come out of it was the Dr. said with 100% certainty that I did NOT HAVE A STROKE.  He said during the winter months he sees maybe 2 or 3 of my cases.  It is called a transient global amnesia.  He said if he were to ask several Dr. what causes them he would get several different answers.  The really good news is they seldom happen a second time and there is no after affects from them.  The Dr. said if I had just not felt very good and gone to bed I would have woke up fine and that would have been the end of it.  However I would have not remembered much of those few hours and of course that would have bothered me so now we did the tests and have answers so all is good.  The really fun part is I now have a CD of my brain and it looks great!!!  The part of the brain that shrinks when one gets dementia has not shrunk so I have no excuse for not remembering things or no excuse for doing goofy things.  The short of it is I am normal.  I know there are many people who still question that but I now have medical proof.  Actually I told Terry when I was in the hospital I felt good would come out of my stay and that has happened.  For some time now I have questioned if my arteries were OK and if my heart is OK and I have the answer now, they are fine.  All at the expense of Medicare and supplemental insurance, how about that.  Who said turning 65 is a downer?
We are enjoying a relaxing weekend.  We so enjoyed company the last three weekends but it is also nice to sit back, read the paper, grab a book and sip that french press coffee in the morning without worry or the hustle and bustle of friends.  We are so excited to pick up Aaron/Amy/Leo and Ruby next Sunday(not tomorrow) and then be able to spend some time with them during the week.  There is also a chance that Terry's daughter, Kim and 3 of her children will come next Friday and stay for a time.  Kim's husband is a pilot so they can fly any time IF THERE ARE OPEN SEATS which in this day and age is a big IF.  So we will wait and see but are hopeful they will be able to fly down as that would be so much fun.
This past week we took in our 4th book review which was the best yet.  The book was THE WEIRED SISTERS and the author was at the book review.  It was very fun.  The book is written in the first person and she changes from sister to sister.  I enjoyed the book a lot.  We have been able to check out all the books from the library but this book just was too popular so we purchased it.  The author is at Barnes and Nobles this afternoon signing the book so we may go down and have her sign it.  The Barnes and Noble store near us at one time was the largest in the nation.  Not sure it is now but it is big.
There is a bit of a cool down today and tomorrow.  The temps have been in the 80s but today and tomorrow it may be low 70s or high 60s.  I will not complain.
I am into my old habits, the french press coffee is down to the last drop.

A great weekend

We were honored to have Jerry/Susan Wind spend Friday and Saturday with us.  The top photo is the four of us at Clam Pass Beach and the second and third photo is at Naples Pier as one can see. To get to Clam Pass beach one can walk or take a free golf cart ride the .6 miles on the board walk.   We ate out, we talked, we went on the beach shuttle, we talked more, Terry and Susan went shopping---we had a great time.
All is well here.  I have had no after affects of my past Monday.  I do have a follow up Dr. appt this Friday but I am sure all is fine.  I ran the last two days, went on a 8 mile bike ride today and played tennis so all is well.
The temps have begun to creep up a bit here in Naples.  What used to be high 60s, mid 70s have now become high 70s and low 80s.  Not bad I would say.
I bought a saw last week and today got it out of the box and set it up.  It is pretty much the same as one I have in St. Paul but newer and nicer as that one is now 13 years old.  I figured out how I want to set things up for when I do start to cut so it is a go this week.  We have enough happening so we will not be bored.  Terry has tennis on Wed, we have a book review on Thursday as well as my class at night and then the Dr. appt on Friday.  No company this weekend so it will be a bit slow but good I think.  The next company should be Aaron/Amy and kids on the 19th when we pick them up at the airport.  They will stay with Amy's parents in Ft Myers but will spend time with us too.
Enough for tonight.

No picture of the past events but a special day for Ruby

HAPPY 2ND BIRTHDAY RUBY
It has been a week since I wrote last and an interesting week indeed.
Last Friday I celebrated my 65th birthday.  Terry and I had a fun day and topped it off with a wonderful sea food meal in a nice restaurant.  I received one birthday card that encouraged me to do something I had never done before.----So being the kind of adventurous guy I did.
Monday I woke up and went on a short run.  We then had breakfast with Terry's brother and wife who spent the weekend with us.  They left at 9:00 AM and Terry had tennis at 10:30 so she left at 10:15.  About 11:25 I felt something was not right--I was able to get on my bike, ride the short distance to the tennis courts and motion for Terry to come off the court.  I said something was not right.
By 12:30 I was in the hospital ER.  I have only a foggy memory of the time between 8:30 AM and 1:00 PM or so.  I had a ultrasound, a MRI and a echogram(sp).  It seems all checked out OK.  By mid afternoon on Monday I was back to normal but with the need for the tests I stayed in the hospital over night and was not released until about 6:00 PM yesterday.  At this time I have no restrictions on diet or activity and no physical or mental effects.  So much for doing something I had never done.  I do have a follow up appt with the Dr. next Friday just to make sure all is OK.  So much for the past week.
We are excited for tomorrow.  We are having three sun tunnels installed in the house here.  We share a wall with the neighbor so one side of the house has no windows.  It will be exciting to have more natural light in the house.  We will put one in the entry way, one in the kitchen and one in the living room.  They should be able to complete the work in one day.
Jerry and Susan will come Friday and stay over night and we can hardly wait.  They are in Lakeland now visiting her dad.  Then in about three weeks Aaron/Amy and kids will be here so February will be a good month.
No coffee now as it is bed time so I only say it is time for some shut eye.
