Company today

Day 17, "Every picture has a story"

So this is not my favorite picture but it is REAL.  It is a crack in the foundation of the house.  Every summer I need to fix one, two or so of these.
In 1946 (the house was built in 1906) the Ruth family jacked up the house and put in a new foundation.  I am sure the foundation went from limestone to cement block at that time.  While they were at it they took the front porch off and put in a fireplace.  So as the math wiz that I am (😉) that means the foundation is 72 years old.  Well if anyone knows a 74 year old who does not have issues let me know.  So I patched this crack and have at least one more to patch.  It is an easy job but a matter of where it fits on the priority list!

Oh my goodness sometimes 24 hours can seem like a lifetime!  Twenty-four hours ago:

  • We had no hot water and it looked like it could be days.
  • Our gas pipes fix seemed at least a week out.
  •  Our Craig's List items seemed doomed to remain on Niles Ave forever.
  • The upstairs work seemed weeks and $$$$'s away.
  • The bunny population seemed to be heating up.
  • The red tag on our gas supply said, "hands off"
  • Need I say more?
So this morning 24 hours later:
  • We have hot water and I actually turned it down cause it was too hot
  • At least one item on Craig's List is history but with a teary good-bye from Terry and I totally understand.
  • There still needs to be pipes fixed but it can wait a bit.
  • There is a serious start on the upstairs rehab.
  • The bunny population seems a bit in check
  • I am not concerned about the red tag on the gas
  • BUT there may be concern about the bank account!!!😧. Not really, it will be fine until next month!
John, Mary and kids will spend a couple of hours here this afternoon.  The kids may be antsy as they are on their way to a lake cabin but grandpa will try his best to entertain for a short while.  Maybe burgers and chips will help and I am sure the raspberry patch will help as well.   Actually they are on their way to the west coast where Mary's only aunt lives among her 100's of paintings and some little critters.  Nona lives alone as far as people but she has many things to entertain her as well as many projects for visitors to engage in!
Everyday some things get done, well not enough but some.  Yesterday I did some work in the wood shop but after about 2 hours in 95+ heat I decided it was a day.  Before that I unloaded about 100+ pieces of hard maple that we picked up from Mark S.  I stacked the ones without nails and the nail ones are in a pile.  How to get those nails out, that is more than interesting.  Terry got some flowers weeded and also some great meals.  Poor bike Bentley has been unused for a week now and today it remains in the basement.  Maybe towards the end of the week it will get on the road again.  Darn, there are just way too many voices calling for attention and I can't seem to answer them all.
No the breakfast dishes are calling (I will answer), the FP is gone and it is time to sign off.
