Day 55, "Every picture has a story"
Standing in the dirt looking like the rookie teacher that I was!!!
There I am standing in a muddy field getting a pail of dirt for my classroom.  I am guessing it is the spring of 1970.  I had a 4th grade class at the school for the deaf and my science lesson was going to be planting seeds in milk cartoons.  One of my MOST challenging students was Loren C.  Among many of his outburst was his attacking me with the point end of a compass one day.  Good thing I could, at that time, move fast!  On to the seeds.  We planted them and set them in the west window for sunlight.  In about a week they came up and the kids were so excited to see them grow.  Couple of weeks later IT happened.  One of the kids did not have a pencil so I walked to the office to get one.  The students at the school for the deaf did not have to buy any supplies so we got them from the office.  I came back into the room and half of the plants were pulled up and the other half of the milk cartoons were filled with water.  Nice going Loren!  So ended my science experience.  The history of Loren was in due time he ended up in prison.  I do not know for what but it may have been for stabbing someone!!!

Terry and I spent about 3 hours at Servant Camp yesterday.  Terry got to see more of the camp as we drove around some.  We arrived about 3 and left about 6.  We saw Liam, Audrey, Faustina and Jude.  I got to talk to many of the staff and of course there were memories and memories to recall.  I think they have about 300 campers and about 120 staff.  I talked to Pat F., the current director.  He said the 11th and 12th grade junior staff are so mature now compared to LONG ago.  He recalled, "Do you remember when you put me in charge of the 8 boy junior staff a long time ago?  I explained to them on Sunday night where they were supposed to be the next morning as they would be helping at activities.  The next morning not ONE of them showed up for their job!  Some slept in, some stayed in the dining room etc."  Now the junior staff are so so mature and do such a great job.  Fun to remember but no way would I chose to go back to the "good old days".

Painting did not happen yesterday.  I got a call in the morning that my 14' hand rail was in and Terry wanted to get some material for a make over of a silk bed spread we got in China so it was off to get some things done and then to Servant Camp so no painting but today it will happen.  Travis is coming over at 9:30 and we are going out for breakfast but after that it will be pedal to the metal thing!

Mary Saunders called and she has set up a time for Mary/Mark Saunders, Deb Binde, Deb/Al Saunders and Terry and I to have dinner (supper) here in the cities on September 16th.  We are given the job of finding a place to meet at.  Mary also related that Deb and Al are in the process of finding another place for Grandma Saunders to live.  I think it has become too difficult for the staff where she stays to care for her.

I think I need to stop watering the garden every morning as the cucumbers are growing to fast!  We are in a hot dry spell now so the garden begs for water and the lawn is starting to suffer as well.

No the time is going by and I want/need to get on the bike for a short ride before Travis comes over at 9:30.  The FP is down to the top of the red tent on my coffee cup so it is time to tip it up and be on my way.
