Day 115, "Every picture has a story
Farmers Union was a big part of growing up. We would go to Farmers Union meetings, which were held at Wood Lake School, monthly. I know Farmers Union is an organization that is for farmers BUT I never saw that happening at our meetings. They always consisted of old business, new business, program and then lunch. NEVER did I hear anything about FARMERS. Now there were several important things connected to FU. I always looked forward to the lunch of course. AND there always was a sing along with Rollof starting out by asking to sing "Sing Your Way Home" Of course he always got a laugh but then Mom would start playing the music for that song. Also in the summer the meeting was usually over in time for dads and boys to play a ball game. Then there was THE SLIDE SHOW which I NEVER looked forward to. Farmers Union sponsored a trip to New York one time and another to Washington DC and Dad went "for sure" AND one could guess that he came home with MANY pictures and they then became the program, slide show, for an upcoming meeting. Usually it would be the 3rd or 4th or 5th or more time we had sat through the slides. AND there was the time Dave and I drove the truck to the meeting when Mom and Dad went to camera club but I have written about that in my book.
One of the most memorable and not so pleasant memories of Farmers Union was the year, maybe 1955 or so, Dave and I went to Farmers Union Camp. I don't remember the town it was in but in today's world there is a Farmers Union Camp in Elgin ND so I will say Dad drove us to Elgin. First it seemed like a long ride. Dad dropped us off and Dave and I were on our own to register and get our assignment for sleeping. I remember sitting in this big hall with maybe 150+ or so. Well to be honest, as I remember, it seemed like a million but "for sure" that was not the case. Anyway there were several dorms and this lady stood up to call our names and give us our dorm number. Everyone sat through the entire ordeal and then scampered away to put their bedding in the dorm. They started out with the girls so I settled back and started talking to Dave. Then, to my embarrassment, they called Carmen Lee's dorm number with the girls! IF I could have gone home then I would have walked! I just did not know what to do. If this would have been my high school days I may not have upset--just kidding. After everyone had left the hall for the dormitories I walked up to the lady and in the voice of a mouse I said I was Carmen Lee and they put me with the girls. She was so nice and on the spot she crossed out the dorm and gave me another one. BUT my camp was spoiled. I remember some of the things we did like boating, playing ball etc but really the week was a disaster in every way. I even think I got in trouble but I can't remember what for. That was the one and only camp I ever attended and one that I would NEVER forget.
Yesterday was fun. I played tennis in the morning and then Terry mentioned that maybe we should go to the Greek Festival. She had read in the paper that Friday was opening day and from 11:00-2:00 they would not charge the $5 entry fee. The festival is huge and I am sure 1000s of people go over the weekend. We arrived about 1:15 and there were a lot of cars in the lot. I am guessing the "no entry fee" was a way to get people coming on a Friday afternoon. We had lunch, browsed and left about 2:30 or so. I had lamb, which I had never had and then a cup of Greek coffee. It was good but I am guessing it was about 1/3 sugar!
From there we stopped at Costco and picked up meat for our February 21st villa pool party. That was our day. Of course we did watch a Netflix movie in the evening.
After tennis I did get in a talk with Karl, one of the guys on my tennis team. He is, by far, the guy I go to for input about pairings etc. He also helps with the snacks after the matches. Without him it would be a lot more difficult managing the team. I needed to talk to him about one of the players that I am having a difficult time placing in our matches. His input was very good. We wrap up the first half of the season next week and it would be nice to finish the first half on an UP note.
We finally got our pool heater cleaned so we can heat the pool again. The roof people had dropped cement in it so they had to come and take it apart to clean. I think it will be warm enough this afternoon to use. I know, I have become a wimp as I want/need it to be warm before I jump in!
Enough for this morning. I finished my FP before I sat down at the computer.
