TERRY
As I sit at the computer this morning at 8:00 AM Terry has gone back to sleep. She was awake for a little while and was coughing which concerned me but now is peaceful and sleeping again. I am hoping she is good for our dinner that I will pick up at the club at 1:00.
What would one expect to see on the blog other than turkey on Thanksgiving?? On special days of the year I tend to think back on times past so will make my blog today "things of the past"
- Yes there was a time when Mom wanted turkeys so we had three or four. If my memory serves me right and now days that is not a sure bet but they were kind of mean and would try to chase Dave and I at times. I am sure we ate them at some time.
- Of course I think back at times that ALL six of us kids were home for Thanksgiving. It was a grand day when ALL of us sat around the table and enjoyed the delicious food Mom made. I promise there was nothing fancy about our menu but it was VERY good. I still think Mom was the best.
- During the times Ronald was home Dave and I always tried to get him to play catch or play ball with us. He was a wonderful BIG brother.
- I am not sure why but I can picture HOW Dad ate lefse. While everyone in the family took a piece of lefse and spread butter on it and then rolled it up, not Dad. He took a hunk of butter and put it on his plate. Then he would take his knife and put some on the top of the lefse and then would enjoy. The thing was he had to do that before every bite!
- We did not have turkey all the time and I am guessing that was because we would have had to buy it. Instead we had ham that often came from Dad's trap shoots or chicken too I THINK. If Helen or Joan read this they may say I am wrong which as you know would be the first time this month😄.
- IF the weather was warm enough it was a day to enjoy lefse, eat much food and play outside. If it was cold and I am sure that was the case much of the time it was Monopoly, Tourning Card game or playing with the erector set and Lincoln Logs. There may have been a puzzle in progress and also a table tennis game in the kitchen after the dishes were cleared.
- Of course Thanksgiving days were kind of divided into two different kinds. One kind was when Ronald and Janet were still in high school and the other kind was after they left home and then it was "WILL THEY COME HOME FOR THANKSGIVING?" Of course I was 7 or so when Ronald left for college and then Janet two years later. IF they did not come home I just could not understand that!!!
- Actually I enjoyed the days leading up to Thanksgiving almost as much as the day. Because that would be when Mom made lefse and that was a lot of fun. Mainly because we could always eat more than one piece as it came off the lefse grill!
- When I think about it we may have had deer meat for Thanksgiving sometimes as that was pretty close to deer hunting season.
- Lastly I will add a Thanksgiving memory of our family in St. Paul. For several years I would reserve a turkey from a farm just east of St. Paul. The Saturday before Thanksgiving I would drive down to the Farmers Market and pick it up. We ended up buying beef from the farmer as well from time to time. The Farmer's Market was a fun place to shop as it was open Saturdays and Sundays. It was pretty much closed for the season in late November but that was where the farmer would park to sell his turkeys.
No here it is 8:30 and I am going to try and play tennis this morning at 9:00. I have this bum right foot that is sore so I may not be able to play all that much but will give it a try. I admit I think some say that about my tennis even when I am not hurt!!!
BUT the day will be good. A meal fit for a king and queen at 1:00 and then just relaxing the rest of the day. I do have my Christmas cards in the car and will get them mailed tomorrow as they have been ready for some time. AND with the Christmas shopping all finished I may just be able to enjoy the Advent Season as it is supposed to be enjoyed as we so look forward to the birth of our Savior. The FP is almost gone for the morning.
Happy Thanksgiving! Enjoy your dinner. I don't remember much about Thanksgivings at home so if you say that's what we had I guess we did! I remember more about Christmas. We've got a dreary cold day here. I'll do Thanksgiving with friends tomorrow. Today I'll watch football and fix steak and eggs for breakfast. The Elks did dinner last week so I've had the traditional meal and enjoyed every bite. :-) Have a good day and I'll look forward to getting your Christmas card, and I'm sure it will be the first one I get. Love, Helen
