The last day of April 2017

May was a time of working the fields and seeding the summer crops

May was the time of our school picnic at the lake and perhaps the first swim of the year

May was the time Mom would plant the garden and tend to her beloved Hollyhocks!
As I slide towards the end of my 10th year in retirement I think about what May meant in the past.  Some things:

  • planting the crops
  • picking thousands of rocks
  • dragging the fields before the seedlings came up
  • a swollen creek which meant fish, fun and adventure
  • the end of the morning and evening walks to Wood Lake school
  • the end of the big yellow bus arriving at 7:05
  • the beginning of adventures on the big and little bikes
  • releasing the cows into the pasture for the summer
  • little calves to play with and feed
  • checking the alfalfa to see when we could build our HUGE hay stacks
  • looking forward to rains which meant play time in the mud
  • time to play ball with Dave and sometimes Ricky with the corn crib as a back stop
  • a time to start mowing the lawn with the sweet smell of cut grass
  • the return of black birds that were great targets for the 22 rifle
  • blossoms on the plum trees
  • a time to disc the fields that we would the summer fallow
  • a time when shirts and shoes were left on the bedroom floor for days at a time as all I needed for clothes were pants and a belt
  • a time when we may be able to see the mail man, Fritz, coming and meet him.  Sometimes he would have a candy bar for us
  • the arrival of little chicks on the back seat of Fritz's mail car.  They came in a box of 100
  • of course that meant killing and butchering later on blood squirting all over and the smell of scalded feathers thick in the air
  • which of course meant later on fried spring chicken which was the best outside of pheasant
  • The beginning of being alone much of the time with family but no friends from school
May was a time of a new beginning, a new summer work/vacation time and a time on the farm when all was well and God seemed to be around the next corner.  I do not mean that life at that time was perfect but growing up on the farm in the 50's, for me, was usually a time of freedom and fun.  When I could get out of work there was fishing, swimming, ball, shooting blackbirds, making wooden toy guns, working on my golf course, shooting gophers, playing with the calves and much more.  I have to admit that in the early 60's, my high school days, there were many times of loneliness as brother Dave was gone, sister Helen and I did not share the same love of ball etc and it seemed that Dad's time to play with me was very limited.  I would be on a HIGH when he would hit the baseball to me and I thought Sunday afternoons would be perfect but that was usually his time to nap!  So for me it usually meant taking the 22 and looking for victims or hitting the golf ball on my homemade course.
I remember late summer of 1962.  That was WAY before I thought girls were interesting!  I received a letter in July.  A letter to me, I could not believe it.  I opened it and read a note from Mr. Hanson, the football coach at the high school.  It invited me to join the football team about 10 days before school started.  I showed it to Dad and he just read it and put it aside.  He said not a word to me.  Days went by and I kept that letter close to my bed stand.  Sometimes at night I would read it before I turned the light off and the more I read it the more I wanted to play football.   The first day of practice came and went and I said nothing.  Finally about 3 days after football had started I asked Dad one night if I could play football.  In a casual way he said sure!  I figured what the heck, why didn't he say that without me asking?  The next day Dad drove me to Forman to join the team in their 4th day of practice.  After that day Dad would bring me to Cayuga as a bus took players to Forman for practice.  I remember Mr. Hanson shaking Dad's hand and mine and then saying he would find some gear for me.  I did not even know what football players wore!  He even found some used football shoes for me as of course I had none.  That day I tried to stay close to Larry, my best friend from grade school, as he had been there from day one and knew what we should do.  As I look back I am sure Mr. Hanson was excited to see this strapping farm kid who was big for a freshman, tan like an Indian and loved to run and hit people.  A small note, when I was captain of the team in my senior year I was the same height, perhaps a bit heavier with more muscle I am sure.  I played baseball, track, football and basketball in HS but without a doubt football was my favorite.  Perhaps it was because farm work with bales of hay, rocks to pick and other things made my body strong.  I was very shy and quiet but on the field I loved to run someone down and hit him, in a good way of course!  In my senior year, as captain, I was to open the envelope to announce the homecoming queen, put the crown on her and kiss her cheek!  I remember turning a few shades of red before halftime.  It was not that I had never kissed a girl but in front of God and everyone on the football field--not something I wanted to do!  Wait I guess I have never kissed a girl without God present!!!  I remember Mr. Newman, the assist coach.  He had graduated from Jamestown Teachers College and he said the football coach wanted to talk to me about enrolling there and he was sure I would get very good financial aide.  I knew I did not want to be a teacher so I said NO.  So what did I do, I taught for 38 years!
Way way enough as time is fleeing and my FP is long gone.  I know, way to much to read.

My mistake!

I finally got the windows hung and then to my dismay I realized that I need to redo them.  They are not spaced in a good way.  I need to move each pair of windows in towards the center 7 inches and then they will look a lot nicer.  I hung each so that they are at the outer edge of the couch but not a great idea.  Live and learn I guess but what the heck I am now 70 so how much more do I need to learn?
We are in for a HOT couple of days.  Actually the forecast shows that the next 7 days could be in the 90's with tomorrow being 94.  They said the heat index for Friday will be about 100.  We got put into over flow tennis on Friday which means the courts were full at 9:00 AM.  SO we are scheduled to play at 10:30!  Yikes, we may want to go over to Spanish Wells at an earlier time with the humidity and temp being HIGH.  I am not complaining as with the warm weather I can come home from tennis and relax in the pool for a time.
My FP is finished and I need to get dressed for 9:00 AM tennis.

A fun afternoon

Leaving Naples pier as we head towards the gulf

How about that for a summer home you use 3 months or so!

Don't think that yacht is in the cards for Terry and me
Terry and I spent about 4 hours on the water and having lunch with a tennis team member and his wife.  It always amazes me and I am in awe of what people have and the money they spend.  We had intended to boat to Marco Island but the wind was such that we knew coming back would be very rough so we spent our time on the back waters boating up and down the canals.  I would stare at one house and then the next one was bigger and more fancy!  An educated guess about the last picture would be the house cost 15 million and the boat another 2 or 3!  And this I am sure is a WINTER home used maybe 3 or 4 months of the year.  I contrast that with Dad's house and all his belongings that sold for under 10 thousand at his auction!  It was a very fun day and Rich and Linda, who we were with, are wonderful people.  At lunch Terry ordered oyster rockefeller and they were terrific.  We left our house at 9:30 and arrived home about 3:00 or so.  I was TIRED just from being on the water.
Tennis today at 9:00 and then some things need to be done.
I still have not gotten those windows with pictures hung but that may happen today.  I get nervous that the windows leaning against the wall will fall and a pane will break.
Enough, will wrap the right leg, put ointment on the legs and head out to the fitness center to warm up for tennis.

A NEW PROJECT

Four of the sun room windows from Niles Ave put to good use
We saved the 8 windows that came out of the sun room on Niles Ave.  In St. Paul and here in Naples we will post all the kids, all the grand kids and one great grand kid on one of the walls.  It is a project I intended to do at the beginning of winter but my excuse is that darn tennis got in the way so here it is being completed near the end of our winter stay in Naples.  It will be a totally new project when we get to St. Paul.  Those windows have 10 panes so will have to canvas the kids to see if there may be more grand kids or great grand kids on the way!!!  Here we filled in the empty panes with Terry and Terry/me.  Our pictures include Denali National Park, Lindbergh State Park in MN and on the tennis court.  Now we have to decide where to hang them in the house.  I am excited to get them hung as I think they will look very very nice.
It rained yesterday and last night so this morning I hopped on my bike to see what the tennis courts looked like and they are flooded.  I would say NO tennis today but then I do not play on Sunday anyway.  The courts have been so so dry as we are in a drought.  They water the courts 3 times each 24 hours and still the heat and wind dry them out so much.  If any family or friends happen to read this and wonder about the fires in south Florida we are fine.  Some of them are close but we do not have to worry.  I would say one major one is as close as 10 miles but there is not wooded land between us and the fires.  The fires are a major major source of concern and destruction.
It is Sunday so I can enjoy my FP with a bit of Baileys.  This morning it is extra special as I am drinking the last of my Kona coffee.  It served me so well each Monday during tennis league maybe I should have saved it for next year but decided not to.
We are looking at about 3+ weeks before we head north.  As always there is a lot to do before then.  I say that with tongue in cheek as a full day at the age of 70 would have been a short morning at the age of 50!

Happy Easter, and may the Lord's blessings continue in your life

As I sit at the computer this Easter Sunday I think and remember:

  • I am so so far from perfect yet the Lord loves me and has set me free
  • Even though I so often struggle He is there and he gives me strength and protection
  • I remember WAY back on the farm as Mom would get the entire family ready for Easter Sunday church.  She was so excited to meet Jesus in a new way and she did everything possible to make the day special
  • I remember Don F who had a birthday on April 1st and was dying of cancer in 2012.  We met at the Grand Cafe and he said his goal was to live until his birthday in 2018 because his birthday would be on Easter Sunday.  Don died later that summer but I am sure he is celebrating today.
  • Of course I remember many Easter Sundays when the family was young.  To church and then home to cream potatoes and ham.  There would be outdoor games if the weather was nice and indoor board games if not.
  •  I was not born with a desire for pageantry or long events.  I remember we went to Saturday night Easter Vigil and it was really really lone.  It was meaningful but not my thing!
  • Easter brings many many more things to mind and they are all dear to my heart.
Terry and I will attend church today and then spend a quiet Easter Sunday at home with a special meal.  I would say that most people here in Naples, that we hang around with, will go out for Easter dinner but eating out is not our thing.  I did enjoy my SPECIAL coffee this morning as most Sundays I mix a bit of Irish Cream in it and today was no exception.  It was GOOD.
Yesterday was a quiet day.  I finished the book "Never Caught".  It is the story of a slave that was in the George Washington home.  She ran to freedom when she as in her 20s.  They never were able to get her back.  A VERY interesting story about slavery in the early 1800s.  Then I took the 10 foot ladder and set it up in the pool.  With the power washer going full strength I was able to get all of the pine needles off the cage over the pool.  I would say that is the first time in a LONG time the pine needles are completely gone BUT some will return.  We did have some trimming done so it is not as bad as it was early in the winter.
Thursday vice P Pence was in town and played a round of golf.  There is a golf course very close to us that is kind of unmarked and hidden.  It actually is behind Wal-Mart.  He played there and traffic was snarled for a long time.  IF one wanted to be a member of the private course you would have to be invited and then have pocket change of $300,000 for the fee.  I have no idea what the yearly fee is but I suspect it is WAY beyond 99.999999% of the people.  I was out and about and as I drove past a diner I noticed about a dozen motorcycles parked.  It was only later that I realized it had to be the secret service.
The phones shows that the weather should be 84 with possible showers this afternoon.  SW Florida is very very dry and any rain would be so welcome.
My Irish Cream/FP is gone so it is enough for now.

Palm Sunday

These pictures were painted during two services on Palm Sunday.  We went to the 10:30 service where the bottom picture was painted.  I am guessing he worked on it for about 45 minutes.  He started out painting for about 25 minutes and I could not make out what he was doing.  Then he turned the canvas 180 degrees and there was the picture!  Very nice.
Terry and I hosted our last villa picnic for the season yesterday.  The turn out was small but we had a nice time.  Few people came because some have gone north for the summer but some are still acting like 2 year olds.  Their attitude is "if I can't have my way I will take my toy and leave!"  Sometimes adults, well they are old enough to be adults, are far worse than kids.   Regardless we had super food and a fun time with the people who came.
It is on to 7:30 tennis after my FP this morning.  I kind of strained a muscle yesterday so it is either take it kind of easy this morning to cut play short.  We will see.
The first cup of FP is gone so time to sign off and get that second cup.

A sketch from my book
I do not enjoy watching a lot of TV but I have watched a good deal of the Masters this week.  There has been much about Arnie Palmer as he was the "Masters" and this is the first since he died about 6 months ago.  The sketch shows me ready to tee up the ball that was most likely named Arnie.  MANY Sunday afternoons while Mom knit and Dad napped Arnie, Jack and Gary played golf and Arnie always won!  Good memories but perhaps a bit lonesome too as playing ALONE on Sunday afternoons was okay but not great.
Things are happening here but then not much is happening!  Terry is doing so much better and that means she is doing a lot of work which I did not do over the last several months.  There is much to clean up, much to sort, much to order as we look towards Minnesota in about 6 weeks.  We also are doing some clean up on paper work that was in need of doing.
I pretty much have things in order for tennis next year so I can forget about that for the next 6 months.  As I sit here at the computer and look around the den there is MUCH to do here but perhaps I can get things done early this week.
Terry and I will take in Palm Sunday where there is going to be a special service with a guy who paints as the word is spoken.  It should be interesting.
It will get pretty quiet here as our neighbors to the south will leave for IL Monday and John on the north is not here much now.  We have a last villa party scheduled but we have not put out the flyer yet.  That should have been done Friday.  Will see if it gets done this PM.  IF we have it the turn out will be small as several couples have left for the year.
The FP is pretty much done and so am I for now.
